Logos and branding are an integral part of the modern commercial world. While I believe that a more in depth brand approach will always produce a better result for a business, sometimes only small logos are wanted by clients and they serve their purpose.
While creating a new logo, it may be tempting to rush the process, pick something similar to your competition, or worse yet use a template system! Even a single logo (different from a more in depth branding approach) should be unique enough to stand out in the environment as a point of identification for your business. We truly are living in the age of information, so having a logo that stands out a little more than the competition, has become a sad reality as our brains are “information bombed” repetitively each day.
Another key point which may sound odd, is a good logo should also communicate the “mood” behind your business sometimes over being literally just about what you do. For example if your business is of a more formal/serious tone then the logo should reflect that as the literal parts of what you do can be stated quite simply in the explainer (the lettering after the name) or in other pieces of media you use, ie. your website.
The following pieces are a collection of logos with a few collateral images thrown in to demonstrate how the logo was used. Projects displayed vary from corporate to more casual industries.

Conclusion
While this is just a small collection of some of the logos myself and my colleagues have worked on, we hope you have a bit of an idea of the benefit (at least visually) on putting a little bit more work in while creating a new logo for your next business/product.
While a good logo won’t make a product an instant success by any means, it does aid in helping an audience remember your product and it does subconsciously create a sense of legitimacy in your viewers.
